Get ready for another shake-up from Elon Musk. He jumped on the PowerfulJRE video podcast earlier this month, and said he’s building a new, separate chat app called X Chat.
He’s promising it’ll be super private and won’t have any ads, which means he’s going straight after big players like Telegram and WhatsApp.
Like Bitcoin, But for Texting
Musk said his team just finished rebuilding the whole messaging system for his X platform. This new architecture is the engine behind X Chat. What is most important is that it’ll use peer-to-peer encryption.
Fancy words for a security lock that he says is similar to the system Bitcoin (BTC) uses. This basically locks your chats down tight.
He’s making it clear that privacy and security are the absolute focus. There will be zero ads, and they promise not to peek at or use your personal info to try and sell you things. This is a huge deal, since most other chat apps basically make their money by collecting your data.
What It Can Do
The new system isn’t just for making X’s direct messages better. It’s coming out as its own app, X Chat. Once it’s out, you can use it for everything you usually do: sending text messages, sharing files, and making both voice and video calls.
You’ll have two ways to use it: either built right into the X platform or as a separate app you download. That gives you the flexibility to use it however you want.
He’s Not Happy with WhatsApp
Musk didn’t hold back his criticism of WhatsApp. He argued that the way WhatsApp is built allows it to show you ads based on what you talk about in your private chats.
He warned that if the service providers can look at your messages to push ads, then sneaky hackers could find the same digital holes to sneak in and steal your private conversations.
Musk let slip that we should see X Chat launch in the next few months. So, if you’re worried about who’s watching your chats, a new, super-secure option might be on your phone very soon.
