Retail giant Amazon recently announced a series of advancements across delivery, robotics, AI and sustainability, underscoring its commitment to customer satisfaction, employee well-being and environmental responsibility.

Faster deliveries with next-gen fulfilment centres

Amazon has unveiled its most advanced fulfilment centre yet in Shreveport, Louisiana, US. This facility utilises a fleet of robots, including the fully autonomous Proteus, to expedite delivery times while enhancing safety and sustainability.

AI streamlines delivery routes

Amazon’s vision-assisted package retrieval (VAPR) technology employs AI to streamline delivery driver routes.

Launching in 1,000 electric Rivian vans in 2025, VAPR automatically identifies packages for each stop, reducing driver workload and saving more than 30 minutes per route.

Sustainable packaging initiatives

Amazon has eliminated all plastic air pillows from its global packaging and retrofitted machinery to create made-to-fit paper bags, reducing environmental impact.

Since 2015, Amazon has reduced average per-shipment packaging weight by 43%, avoiding more than 3 million metric tonnes of packaging waste.

Climate Pledge Fund backs green startups 

Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund, established in 2020, continues to invest in companies pursuing net zero carbon emissions.

Recent investments include Molg, a developer of robots that disassemble electronics to minimise e-waste, and Paebbl, a company transforming CO₂ into construction materials.

AI shopping guides for informed purchases

Amazon’s AI shopping guides provide tailored content within the Amazon app, assisting shoppers in navigating product categories, understanding features and discovering top brands.

These guides aim to streamline the shopping process and enhance product selection.

Grocery shopping reinvented

Amazon is also testing innovative grocery delivery options.

Customers can now combine grocery orders with everyday essentials for same-day delivery.

Amazon Fresh fulfilment centres are piloting integration with Whole Foods Market, allowing customers to purchase all three in a single transaction.

Additionally, Amazon’s first micro-fulfilment centre allows Whole Foods Market customers to pick up or order essentials alongside their groceries.

Expanding same-day pharmacy delivery

Amazon Pharmacy is expanding to 20 new US cities in 2025.

Leveraging existing infrastructure and AI, Amazon aims to provide affordable, convenient pharmacy services with 24/7 pharmacist access.

These advancements highlight Amazon’s commitment to continuous innovation across its operations.
