55 MW solar project in North Macedonia: Mey Energy has completed the construction of its 1st solar PV project with 55 MW installed capacity in North Macedonia. The company calls it the 1st private PV project to be the largest of its kind in the Balkans. Located in Novaci municipality, the FEC Novaci uses 101,062 solar panels to generate 85,000 MWh annually. In October 2022, GEN-I commissioned a 17 MW solar project calling it the largest operational solar facility in the country. However, solar projects with much larger capacity are in the making in the Balkans.
Ørsted’s Ireland win: Ørsted has secured 124 MW solar and wind power capacity in the latest renewable energy auction round concluded in Ireland. The approved projects under RESS 3 include Ørsted’s 81 MW Garreenleen Solar Farm in Carlow and 43.2 MW Farronrory Onshore Wind Farm in Tipperary. Both the facilities will be commissioned before 2030. The Danish company is in a partnership with Terra Solar to develop 400 MW solar energy in Ireland.
Iberdrola’s 74 MW solar plant complete in Spain: Iberdrola has completed the construction of a 74 MW solar PV plant in Spain to hybridize the existing 69 MW BaCa—Ballestas and Casetona Wind Power Complex. It terms the project the country’s 1st hybrid solar wind project. Commissioning of the solar plant with more than 120,000 modules in Burgos Municipalities of Revilla Vallejera, Villamedianilla and Vallejera, is now underway. Iberdrola says the project has important local component.
1 GW solar tender update in Serbia: According to Balkan Green Energy News, Serbia has received 3 offers from interested companies for its 1 GW solar and storage tender launched in July 2023. While the offer from Germany’s Direkt Solar Kühn GmbH did not meet requisite criteria, other 2 offers have come from China Energy International Group, and a consortium of Hyundai Engineering, Hyundai Engineering America and UGT Renewables. The winner will be expected to complete and hand over the project capacity on a turnkey basis.
Axpo’s German solar power deal: Switzerland’s Axpo has signed a power procurement contract with Sunnic Lighthouse GmbH for the supply of 38.4 GWh of solar power/year. A subsidiary of German energy trader ENERPARC AG, the pay-as-forecast structure of the agreement is based on a forecast delivery schedule for each subsequent day. Sunnic will supply solar power from several operational German projects with a combined 39.8 MW capacity. The power purchase agreement will run initially until December 31, 2027.
