150 MW solar project denied permission in Canada: The Alberta Utilities Commission in Canada has rejected applications from Foothills Solar GP Inc for a 150 MW solar power plant in Alberta fearing high bird mortalities. While the commission agreed the project could result in some positive socioeconomic benefits for Cold Lake First Nations, it stated that the impacts of the project on the Frank Lake IBA and the socio-environmental values it represents are ‘unacceptable’. “The Commission finds that approval of the applications is not in the public interest and therefore denies the applications,” it said about the Elemental Energy Renewables project.
150 MW online in Florida: US utility Duke Energy has commissioned 2 more solar power projects in Florida each with 74.9 MW capacity. The Bay Ranch Renewable Energy Center has come up in Bay County, Florida with 220,000 single-axis tracking solar panels. The other project Hardeetown Renewable Energy Center is located in Levy County and is equipped with more than 200,000 single-axis tracking panels. Under the utility’s Clean Energy Connection Program, Duke Energy Florida customers can subscribe to solar power and earn credits towards their electricity bills without installing or maintaining the solar equipment, it added. Recently the company announced commissioning 2 Florida solar projects with 150 MW combined capacity.
EDP’s 150 MW solar PPA in Texas: EDP Renewables (EDPR) has announced signing a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) in Texas, US for 150 MW AC solar project with an unidentified offtaker. The project is scheduled to come online in 2024. The company said it now has 50% of capacity secured out of 17 GW target additions for 2023-26 it announced in March 2023 during the company’s Capital Markets Day.
700 MW PV exchanges hands in Colorado: Denmark’s European Energy says its North American subsidiary EE North America has acquired the majority stake in 700 MW PV capacity in Colorado, US. The 2 solar projects, Sandy Hill and Sand Dune, are being developed by the company under a joint venture with Horus Partners. With this, European Energy says, its existing solar pipeline under development in North America has grown to 2.5 GW across Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado. The company aims to develop 10 GW renewable energy capacity in the US by 2026.
Spanish trackers for US project: Gonvarri Solar Steel of Spain will supply its 72 MW trackers for a Texas solar project of Ferrovial. It will provide its 1,314 TracSmarT+1V single and dual row trackers for 133,336 PV modules. The company says it already has more than 4.2 GW of track record in the American market which it considers a target market for 2023.
