- MCPV says it plans to set up a silicon HJT solar cell factory in the Netherlands
- The 3 GW fab in Groningen will create more than 500 full time jobs once online
- It is part of the SolarNL industrial consortium that recently secured government funding for circular solar panels
A Dutch company called MCPV has announced plans to produce silicon heterojunction (HJT) solar cells with 3 GW annual installed capacity in the Netherlands, backed by a government package of grants and loans for large scale production of circular solar cells and panels in the country.
The PV manufacturing spin-off of Resilient Group, MCPV received state funding as part of an industry consortium SolarNL that bagged €412 million of the €4 billion from National Growth Fund earlier this month.
MCPV says its HJT cell fab is planned to come up in Groningen region in Northern Netherlands where it can. Once online, it will likely create more than 500 full time jobs however, did not reveal details of the prize money or timeline of the proposed project in the official statement. It cites former Head of Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE Prof Eicke R Weber as its co-founder.
“The MCPV project is designed to significantly elevate Europe’s collective capacity within the solar industry and related supply chains, utilizing advanced digital manufacturing technologies, coordinating scale-up across the value chain, and implementing sustainability and circular economy principles from the initial design stages,” stated the management.
According to its website, MCPV plans to start with a 300 MW pilot plant for HJT cells and modules, scaling the company’s industrial production capacity up to 3 GW by 2024, 6 GW by 2025 and 15 GW by 2028.
The Dutch are expecting their solar PV demand to grow in the near future as the country’s Energy Minister Rob Jetten recently proposed to fine tune the country’s National Energy System Plan that shows the country has the potential to install 173 GW solar PV capacity by 2050.
