- Bundesnetzagentur has announced addition of 944 MW new solar PV capacity in March 2023
- It has also updated the monthly additions for January 2023 and February 2023 to 899 MW and 874 MW, respectively
- At the end of March 2023, the country’s cumulative installed solar PV capacity exceeded 70 GW
German Federal Network Agency or Bundesnetzagentur says the country installed 944 MW of new solar PV capacity in March 2023, which adds to the revised monthly installations for the initial 2 months of the year to take Germany’s total installed PV in Q1/2023 to over 2.65 GW.
For the month of January 2023, the agency now counts 899 MW to have been installed, as compared to 874 MW it adjusted earlier. Similarly for February 2023, the previous figure was 746 MW that has now been updated to 808 MW.
While this growth in monthly additions is a positive, the country is still off the mark from 1.557 GW that the agency believes it needs to install every month to be able to reach 215 GW by 2030 as targeted by the government.
Maximum capacity in Q1/2023 was seen to have been installed in the state of Bavaria with 597.9 MW, followed by 397.6 MW in North Rhine-Westphalia, and 380.8 MW in Baden-Wuerttemberg.
At the end of March 2023, Germany crossed the milestone of 70 GW solar PV capacity installed on cumulative basis. The state with largest installed capacity was Bavaria with over 19 GW in total.
Yet, solar is growing faster than other renewable energy sources in the country. In March 2023, onshore wind added 298 MW, offshore wind 67 MW and biomass 5 MW.
Recently, Bundesnetzagentur also announced the results of its successful ground mounted solar auction which was oversubscribed for the 1st time since June 2022.
