Google Pixel 11 to Use Mediatek’s M90 Modem and Drop Samsung’s Due to Energy Efficiency

It seems that MediaTek will soon gain more strength in the field of 5G modems. As per a new report, the giant Google is planning a major change in its in-house silicon strategy. Apparently, the Pixel 11 series will finally move away from Samsung’s modem tech. The decision seems to come to address one of the biggest complaints in the Pixel lineup – battery and connectivity.

Google Pixel 11 To Bring More Efficient MediaTek’s Modem

The leak shared by tipster Mystic Leaks on Telegram claims that Google’s next chip, the Tensor G6, will no longer rely on Samsung hardware. Instead, the company will use MediaTek’s M90 modem, announced earlier this year. Right now, the Tensor G5 in the Pixel 10 series uses Samsung’s Exynos 5400 modem. The new M90 alternative promises peak download speeds of up to 12Gbps. The energy efficiency will also increase, and the new modem offers built-in support for dual 5G SIMs and satellite connectivity.

This could be a big win for MediaTek. It would be the first time Google uses MediaTek parts in its flagship phones. It also means Google is moving away from Samsung’s Exynos modems. Those modems have often been blamed for overheating and draining the battery faster when using 5G.

Even with the shift to TSMC’s 3nm process in the current Tensor G5, Google’s chips still fall short of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon line. Qualcomm continues to lead in both speed and power efficiency.

A Practical Move That Could Improve Tensor G6

Google is taking a more practical path. With the new modem, the company can improve efficiency without having to rebuild the Tensor chips from zero. The Pixel 11, expected to launch in late 2025, may also get better connectivity thanks to this change. A more efficient modem could also mean longer battery life.

The Pixel 10 has a 4,970 mAh battery. The Pixel 11 might get a larger one, but even if it doesn’t, the new modem should make power use smarter and stretch battery life further.

Still, we should take these leaks with caution. Pixel phones often leak many months before launch, and there is still nearly a year before the Pixel 11 arrives. Some details may change by the time the phone is official.
