In terms of appearance, it is 4mm thinner and 3g lighter than the previous generation, while maintaining the same battery life.
The physical pairing button on the back has been removed, and the front LED indicator is now hidden. The outer shell is seamless, except for the hinge on the back and the opening at the bottom.
Instead of physical buttons, Apple has introduced an interesting new pairing method using an accelerometer—tapping gestures. Tap the area near the LED twice to pair, and three times to reset.
The tapping gesture only works when the earbuds are inside the case with the lid open, so there’s no need to worry about accidental operations.
The body of this generation of earbuds is noticeably flatter, and the sound port is now also flat, giving it a lighter visual appearance.
Compared to the “bulky” design of the previous generation, AirPods 4 provides a much more comfortable fit.
The stem still supports pressure-sensitive controls, but unlike the AirPods Pro 2, it lacks the ability to adjust volume by swiping.
The charging contacts on the bottom have changed from two large arcs to three small dots. The inner two dots are for charging, while the outer one disguises a microphone. The long strip above is a wind-noise-reducing microphone. Together, they handle voice calls and active noise cancellation.

The AirPods 4 noise-canceling edition supports Transparency Mode and Noise-Canceling Mode. See the difference? The only thing separating these from the AirPods Pro 2 is the semi in-ear design. It’s a long-overdue but perfect solution for Apple fans who want the benefits of noise cancellation without the discomfort of in-ear buds.
