Common Carrier

A common carrier in logistics is a transportation service provider that offers its services to the public for a fee. Such an entity is mandated to serve any customer who seeks its services, subject to the available capacity.

A common carrier must charge published rates and is liable for any loss or damage of goods during transit. This sets common carriers apart from private carriers, which have the discretion to choose their clientele and mainly transport their own goods without the obligation to serve the general public.
