Apple unveiled its long-rumored iPhone Air (not iPhone 17 Air) as its thinnest smartphone to date. The device brings premium specifications like the Apple A19 Pro and replaces the Plus lineup that ceased with the iPhone 16 Plus. While the device certainly hit the spotlight today, there are other iPhones to show. The iPhone 17 arrives as the basic model starting the ladder of this lineup. Despite this, we’re getting significant updates this year, like improved base storage, display, and Apple A19.
iPhone 17 Display and Design
The iPhone 17 comes with a bigger and brighter Super Retina XDR screen with 6.3 inches. For the first time, a non-Pro iPhone is getting a display with ProMotion – Apple’s fancy name for adaptive refresh rate up to 120Hz. Users will also get the Always-On display on the vanilla for the first time. This allows users to get time, widgets, and Live activities at a glance. The refresh rate can go down to 1Hz when the display isn’t used, and the OLED nature keeps all the black pixels turned off.

The display is covered with Apple’s Ceramic Shield 2. It’s a new Apple-designed coating with 3x better scratch resistance and improved anti-reflection. It reduces glare, while the sunlight view is much better thanks to 3,000 nits. This is the highest brightness ever on an iPhone. Users will also get 2x better outdoor contrast when compared to the iPhone 16.
Performance With Apple A19
The vanilla iPhone 17 brings Apple’s A19 chip, built on a 3nm process. Under the hood, it comes with a six-core CPU that is 1.5x faster than the Apple A15 Bionic in the iPhone 13, according to Apple.

It’s rather intriguing to see that Apple is picking its base model from 2021 to compare with the current model, but I’m not really surprised here. Moving on, the device also has a five-core GPU that is twice the speed of the A15 Bionic. Perhaps, Apple’s strategy here is to convince iPhone 13 owners who want a new model to migrate to the iPhone 17.

The main camera can also deliver lossless 2x optical zoom images. With the Photographic Styles feature, you can customize your photos by adjusting colors, highlights, and shadows in real time. With iOS 26, there is a new Bright Style that will brighten skin tones and “apply a pop of vibrance across the image”.
AI and Battery
With the AI at the center of modern smartphones, Apple is moving on with upgrades. The iPhone 17 gets an improved Neural Engine with support for Apple Intelligence. It also gets a better display engine and ISP. According to the company, you can get up to 30 hours of video playback on one charge. The iPhone 17 can charge up to 50% in 20 minutes. There is an optional “high-wattage USB-C power adapter like Apple’s new 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max.

Connectivity With Apple N1
Apple also added the Apple N1 chip. It features Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread support. The N1 will improve the overall performance and reliability of features like Personal Hotspot and AirDrop. In some regions like Bahrain, Canada, Guam, Japan, Kuwait, Mexico, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, the U.S., and the U.S. Virgin Islands, the iPhone 17 will be available with eSIM only.
