Unique Keyboard for Writers Features Word Count and Timer | CES 2025

Gaming keyboards designed for players are common; however, keyboards specifically for writers are rare.

Astrohaus is a unique tech company whose main product line, Freewrite, specializes in “electronic typewriters” with keyboards and small e-ink screens.

At CES 2024, they showcased a standalone mechanical keyboard, the Freewrite Wordrunner, which reportedly underwent over four years of development and iteration.

Astrohaus states that even though this keyboard is available as a regular product, they still aim to provide users with a “limited edition” special feel.

Therefore, the Wordrunner’s design is thoughtfully crafted: it features an aluminum alloy body with white floating keycaps, lacks a numeric keypad, and overall has a “retro” typewriter-like appearance.

Engadget tested this keyboard and found it to be like an aluminum alloy plate, with a substantial weight and good typing feel and key travel. The manufacturer claims the keyboard is designed to be silent, making it ideal for use in shared spaces.

The first time you see this keyboard, it’s hard not to be drawn to the large red circular button in the upper left corner. This button is actually a media control key: by pressing or tilting it in four directions, you can pause, skip tracks, adjust volume, and more.

The function row at the top of the keyboard is filled with keys specifically designed for text editors: find and replace, undo and redo, previous and next paragraph, page up and down, etc.

On the right side of the keyboard, Wordrunner offers three customizable buttons that can be set to any operation. Astrohaus suggests setting them to launch a writing program, insert header text, or insert the date, among other quick actions.

Two other features designed specifically for writing are the “counter” and “timer” at the top of the keyboard. These indicators and buttons, combined with the keyboard’s metal body, make it look like a precision instrument, giving the typing experience a scientific feel.

The “counter,” named Wordmeter, uses a mechanical counting method. Regardless of whether the device is connected, as soon as the user starts typing, the counter begins to turn. Engadget describes this retro feel as “extremely satisfying.”

The “timer” uses an LED light to track writing time or set a countdown. It’s recommended for writers prone to procrastination.

In terms of compatibility, the keyboard can connect via Bluetooth to three devices simultaneously, including computers and mobile devices. It can also connect to a fourth device through a USB-C cable, with hotkeys to switch between devices.

Wordrunner began crowdfunding in February 2025, with the price yet to be announced. Astrohaus’s typewriters start at $349. Since Wordrunner lacks a screen and storage, its price should be lower.

Astrohaus’s typewriter products have always been controversial. The Freewrite typewriter aims to provide a “distraction-free” writing experience, allowing writers to focus solely on writing without the interruptions common with computers.

Unlike a full device, Wordrunner is just a keyboard and might appeal to a broader audience. Astrohaus states that Wordrunner aims to transform the keyboard from a mere input device into an active writing companion.

As a writer, I don’t resonate much with Freewrite typewriters, but if Wordrunner is priced right, I think it’s worth a try.

Whether it’s word count or a timer, built-in computer editors and apps can provide these. Various writing shortcuts have become muscle memory, so Wordrunner’s “writing-specific” features aren’t really necessary.

However, if it can bring a different feel to writing, adding a sense of “ceremony” to dilute the “work” feeling, making me feel like Hemingway at a typewriter, I would seriously consider buying it. Products that offer emotional value are definitely not just “beautiful but useless” items.
