Volkswagen Is Bringing Innovation to the Masses Once Again: This Time With AI

It seems like AI (artificial intelligence) really is spreading its tentacles everywhere and the automotive industry is next. Leave it to the Germans to be amongst the first to do it and bring innovation to the automotive industry, once again.

Volkswagen has recently unveiled a groundbreaking integration of ChatGPT, an AI-driven chatbot, into the IDA -their voice assistance. Here is everything you need to know.

VW Beating Others to the Market

Volkswagen is the first mass-produced manufacturer to offer ChatGPT as standard, with the rollout starting in the first markets and expanding to many models by Q2 2024. This milestone is showcased at CES, the world’s largest trade fair.

This feature will soon be standard in Volkswagen models equipped with IDA1 voice assistance. The integration, powered by the Cerence Chat Pro program, allows users to access an expanding AI database, enabling features such as listening to content while driving and engaging in natural speech interactions.

Volkswagen is Not New When Talking About Innovation

When talking about automotive innovations, the first brands that come to mind are Volvo and Mercedes-Benz. Volvo is known to innovate the modern three-point seat belt and Mercedes, well, they kind of did all the rest.

However, when it comes to getting innovations to market, Volkswagen is a name worth mentioning as well. Volkswagen was not the first automaker to introduce Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT), also known as Direct-Shift Gearbox (DSG). The DSG technology was initially developed by BorgWarner.

Volkswagen is credited to bring the first mass-produced car with a DSG transmission to the market in their premium brand, Audi. The Audi TT 3.2 Quattro, launched in 2003, was one of the early mass-produced cars to feature the DSG transmission.

The DSG technology quickly gained popularity for its fast and smooth gear changes, offering a compelling alternative to traditional automatic and manual transmissions. This landmark event in the world of transmissions is now considered to be everyday technology, despite the numerous DSG transmission problems still present today.

Which Volkswagen Models Will Feature AI?

Let’s get back to the whole AI thing we started off with. The automatic chat system, coupled with the latest infotainment, will be featured in various models, including ID.7, ID.5, ID.4, ID.3, Tiguan 2024, Passat 2024, and Golf3. The integration extends beyond voice control, offering control over infotainment, navigation, and air conditioning. Future enhancements promise more information delivered in a safe and intuitive manner, ensuring drivers stay focused on the road.

Kai Grünitz, Member of the Management Board, and Director of Technical Development at Volkswagen, highlights the company’s commitment to democratising technology by seamlessly integrating ChatGPT, providing drivers with direct access to an AI-based inquiry tool.

Buyers can continue using the IDA voice assistance seamlessly, with no new account, app installation, or ChatGPT activation required. The voice command “Hello, IDA!” initiates assistance. Importantly, ChatGPT doesn’t access vehicle data, ensuring privacy and adherence to data protection standards.

Are You Ready for “Hello, IDA!”?

Talking to our cars is nothing new, voice control has been present in the premium automotive segment for a couple of decades now, but it was usually something that only looked cool in commercials and no one actually used it (until Tesla came around).

Will AI finally bring the intelligence to the voice commands of your next car?

Without a doubt. From what we have seen, VW’s AI features will enable you to not only talk to your car to make calls, form simple messages or find songs. It will do it all, even read out the recipe for your sunday lunch if that’s what you want.

That does not sound too bad, right?
